Utah Senate pauses to honor Girl Scouts’ 100th anniversary; HCR 8 passes unanimously

Senator Luz Robles introduced House Concurrent Resolution 8 and asked that it be read in full. The resolution recounted the founding of the Girl Scouts in 1912 and cited national and local membership figures including the Girl Scouts of Utah’s reported membership (about 88,500 girls and 3,500 adult volunteers in the text). Robles praised the organization’s emphasis on leadership and community service and asked the chamber to place the item on the third-reading calendar under suspension of the rules.
Several senators offered remarks in support. Senator Jones recalled her own experience in Girl Scouts and encouraged members of the audience and the organization’s leaders. Senators around the chamber thanked the Girl Scouts for service and recognized local troop leaders and participants in the gallery.
The Senate voted on the suspension and final passage. The presiding officer recorded the result as 28 yes votes, no nays and one absence; HCR 8 passed and will be transmitted for the presiding officer’s signature.
The resolution directs that a copy be sent to the Girl Scouts of the USA and the Girl Scouts of Utah Council. The Senate returned to its consent calendar business after the ceremony.
