Sponsor Senator Van Tassel described a private foundation that provides a $25,000 check within 24 hours to a fallen officer’s family and proposed state support for the concept.
Van Tassel introduced the foundation's founder and supporters and moved a floor amendment to insert "Utah Fraternal Order of Police" into the list of supporting organizations. "The purpose of this $25,000 donation is to take care of the family while they are completing their grieving process," Van Tassel said, describing the intended immediate relief while other benefits are processed.
The Senate suspended the rules so the resolution could receive second and third reading and final passage on the same day. The recorded roll‑call vote for final passage was 28 yeas, 0 nays, 1 absent; the resolution will be forwarded to the House for their actions.
