Utah Senate Unanimously Confirms Governor—s Appointees in Extraordinary Session

SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah State Senate convened an extraordinary session May 10, 2012, to consider a package of appointments submitted by Gov. Gary R. Herbert and unanimously consented to the slate, the presiding officer said.
The session was called by gubernatorial proclamation citing Article 7, Section 6 of the Utah Constitution. The reading clerk presented a list of nominees transmitted by the governor, dated May 1, 2012, which included reappointments to the Great Salt Lake Advisory Council and appointments to multiple water conservancy district boards, the Securities Commission, the Board of Aging and Adult Services, the Judicial Conduct Commission, the School and Institutional Trust Lands Board of Trustees and the Dixie State College board of trustees.
Senator Jenkins moved that the Senate consent to the governor—s appointment list after the reading clerk read the names. The presiding officer put the motion to the body and called for a vote. "The vote for confirmation of the governor's appointees is 24 yay votes, 0 nay votes, 5 were absent," the presiding officer announced. The motion passed, and the presiding officer added, "We have consented to the governor's appointments."
The body earlier appointed a small committee to "wait upon the governor's representative" to notify them that the Senate was organized and ready to do business; after the confirmations the committee notified the governor's representative that business had concluded.
The appointments cover a mix of advisory councils, water district boards and oversight bodies. The reading clerk's list named specific individuals for each post (the transcript lists the positions and appointees as read to the Senate). Where an appointee—s specific qualification or background was not spoken to on the floor, the Senate did not request additional testimony during this session.
The extraordinary session convened and completed its stated business within the same sitting and adjourned later in the afternoon.
