Utah Senate reaffirms sister-state ties with Taiwan, urges U.S. trade engagement

The Utah Senate unanimously passed SJR 12, a joint resolution reaffirming Utah's sister-state relationship with Taiwan and urging federal officials to consider deeper trade and international cooperation with Taiwan.
Sponsor Senator Knudsen read the resolution, which praises Taiwan as a democracy and trading partner and urges the U.S. president and Congress to support a free trade agreement and Taiwan's meaningful participation in specialized U.N. bodies and organizations such as the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The Senate suspended the three-reading rule and voted 28–0 for final passage.
After passage, the chamber heard from the Director General of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in San Francisco, introduced as Bruce, who thanked the Legislature for its longstanding friendship and said the resolution strengthened ties and mutual democratic values between Utah and Taiwan.
The resolution expresses support for Taiwan's participation in international forums and welcomes its East China Sea peace initiative. The Senate then resolved to the Committee of the Whole to hear the Director General and returned before resuming the third reading calendar.
