Rules Committee places dozens of bills into standing committees and on second‑reading calendar

Rules Committee Chair John L. Valentine reported to the Senate the committee's assignments of many Senate bills to standing committees, and recommended a long list of measures be placed on the second‑reading calendar.

Valentine read assignments sending bills (SB 21, SB 41, SB 44, SB 136) to Business and Labor; a cluster of bills (SB 45, SB 46, SCR 2, etc.) to Economic Development and Workforce Services; multiple bills to Education (SB 39, SB 42, SB 110, SB 122, SB 128, SB 133, SB 134, SJR 5); a set to Government Operations and Political Subdivisions; Health and Human Services; Judiciary, Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice; Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment; Retirement and Independent Entities; Revenue and Taxation; and Transportation, Public Utilities and Technology. He also listed bills recommended for the second‑reading calendar (SB 10, SB 12, SB 14, SB 15, SB 16, SB 19, SB 20, SB 22, SB 23, SB 24, SB 25, SB 26, SB 27, SB 28, SB 29, SB 31, SB 33‑SB 38, SJR 1).

Valentine explained to newer members that many of these bills were reviewed during the interim and were given 24‑hour notices to standing committees, which met the legal requirements for committee hearings and allowed committees to prepare for floor action. He said some of those bills will be heard that afternoon in standing committee meetings.

Members took the committee reports as presented and the motion to adopt the committee reports passed.
