Utah Senate honors local student who placed fifth at national spelling bee

SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah State Senate took time during its June 17, 2013, extraordinary session to recognize Vismeya Karkar, a sixth grader who placed fifth at the 2013 Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Joanna McKay introduced a Senate commendation honoring Karkar’s achievement. Karkar addressed the Senate from the podium, thanked her family, principal and regional sponsors, and described the experience as “the best of my life so far” despite nerves and stress.
“First of all, I understood for the first time the value of hard work, and that is the only sure path to success,” Karkar said. She told senators the bee taught her persistence and self-belief and thanked the Utah State Senate for recognizing her achievement.
Senators responded with applause and brief congratulations; a small ceremonial moment followed in which Karkar posed with the Senate coin and the chamber recognized her school supporters. The recognition was carried out during the Committee of the Whole and concluded before the session proceeded to other business.
