The Utah Senate passed House Joint Resolution 20, a provisional approval that would allow Promontory Point Resources LLC to construct and operate a class‑5 commercial non‑hazardous landfill in the Promontory Point area, subject to county, Division of Waste Management and Radiation Control, Department of Environmental Quality and governor approvals. The roll call recorded 19 aye votes, 5 nay votes and 5 absent.
Sponsor Senator Knudson described the site as remote and said it had limited nearby population and would accept commercial municipal waste, arguing that the site would create local jobs and revenue. “It’s a perfect place to put a landfill,” he said on the floor.
Other senators questioned whether the county had completed public hearings, whether transportation and railroad access issues had been resolved, and what materials the facility would accept. The sponsor said county process was ongoing and county officials believed issues had been resolved. The resolution passed the Senate and will be sent to the president for signature.
