Senate marks Arts Day: Repertory Dance Theater honored and student artists awarded scholarships

The Utah State Senate used part of its Feb. 9 floor session to recognize arts organizations and student artists participating in Arts Day.
Senator Backus introduced a contingent from Repertory Dance Theater and read a citation honoring the company’s 50th anniversary, describing it as “the nation's premier repertory dance theater” and citing its contribution to the state’s cultural life. The Senate offered a round of applause and formal recognition.
The chamber also recognized winners of the Utah Senate Visual Arts Scholarship Competition. The presiding officer announced the contest drew 93 students from 19 school districts. Scholarship awards were listed on the floor: first place receives $5,000, second place $3,000 and third place $1,000; the presiding officer invited senators to present scholarships and certificates to students in their districts.
Senator Hilliard and other members acknowledged community partners including the Cache Valley Center for the Arts and other local arts organizations. Senators also recognized SPYHOP for receiving the National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award in November 2015 and presented a signed recognition from the Senate.
Remarks on the floor emphasized the role of arts education in complementing STEM subjects and the statewide participation in the scholarship program. The Senate concluded the presentation portion of the session by inviting students and guests to a photo opportunity in the rotunda.
The recognition items were ceremonial; no legislative action was taken on the floor related to the presentations during this portion of the session.
