Utah Senate opens with memorial for intern Zachary Lask

Senator DeBackus opened the Utah Senate session with remarks honoring Zachary Lask, an intern from Washington City who died in an all-terrain-vehicle accident on Dec. 24. She read a short note from the governor and introduced family members present in the gallery, asking colleagues to join in remembering his service and potential.
"Members of my staff had opportunities to work with Zachary on several occasions. They tell me he was smart, professional, and talented," DeBackus said, offering condolences to the family. She identified siblings and parents in the chamber and noted representatives from local schools and institutes who accompanied them.
Following DeBackus’s remarks, the chamber observed a prayer that asked for comfort for those mourning. In the prayer the speaker said, "Heavenly Father, please help us all be a little more like Zach every day," and closed in the name of Jesus Christ.
President Niederhauser thanked the family for attending and extended the Senate’s sympathy. A resolution recognizing Lask’s contributions was noted during the opening remarks and family members were acknowledged on the floor. The Senate recessed into its regular business after the tribute and the Pledge of Allegiance.
