Rules Committee places dozens of bills on second-reading calendar, assigns bills to standing committees

At the start of the Jan. 25 session the Rules Committee, chaired by Senator Kevin Van Tassel, presented its report asking the Senate to place a long list of bills and resolutions on the second-reading calendar. The list included measures across policy areas — insurance, energy efficiency, tax changes, elections, water law, retirement and health policy — and named sponsors and recommended committee assignments.
Van Tassel read the calendar and reported assignment recommendations to committees including Business and Labor; Economic Development and Workforce Services; Education; Government Operations and Political Subdivisions; Judiciary, Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice; Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment; Retirement and Independent Entities; Revenue and Taxation; and Transportation, Public Utilities and Technology. He closed by signing as committee chair.
The Senate moved to adopt the Rules Committee report; the motion carried following a roll-call procedure and senators proceeded to consider the bills on the second-reading calendar. The report also included a recommendation that, with sponsor consent, a substitute for Senate Bill 17 be adopted and that numerous bills be advanced toward third reading the same day.
