Senate unanimously honors Col. Gail S. Halvorsen, the 'Candy Bomber'

The Utah Senate on Day 12 adopted Senate Concurrent Resolution 4, honoring Colonel Gail S. Halvorsen for his humanitarian actions during the Berlin Airlift and for continued public service. Senators invited Halvorsen and family to the Senate gallery and suspended rules to consider the resolution for immediate passage.
Senator Henderson presented the resolution, recounting Halvorsen’s airdrops of candy tied to tiny parachutes during the postwar Berlin Airlift and noting his lifelong engagement with youth and humanitarian causes. “By this chapter of his life, Gail has seen more sunrises than he will see sunsets,” Henderson said while describing Halvorsen’s service.
Senators from across the aisle praised Halvorsen. Senator Dayton said it was an honor to vote aye and thanked Halvorsen and his family for their presence; multiple senators offered personal remarks and recollections of Halvorsen’s influence. The roll-call vote recorded 28 yeas, zero nays and one absent.
The Senate also voted to place the words of SCR 4 in the Senate journal as a permanent record of the body’s appreciation.
Next steps: SCR 4 will be transmitted to the House for its consideration and the resolution’s text will be entered into the Senate journal.
