Senate gives consent to governor’s slate of appointments, 23-0

The Utah State Senate consented to a slate of appointments and reappointments transmitted by Governor Gary R. Herbert on Oct. 18, 2017, approving nominees to multiple state boards and commissions by a recorded vote of 23-0 with six senators absent.
The clerk read appointments to a range of bodies, including the Dene Advisory Committee; Board of Parks and Recreation (Russell B. Steadman); Weber State University Board of Trustees (Marty Carpenter); Air Quality Board (Mitra Basuri Kasanchi); the Utah Digital Health Service Commission (Preston D. Marks); and others. The record also includes nominations to the Employability to Careers Program Board (Erin Osmond and Laurie D. Fulk) and the Youth Parole Authority Board (Dennis A. Martinez).
Senator Daniel Hemmert, reporting on a committee review, said committee members were "super impressed" with a nominee and added that the only concern raised was that the nominee "might be stretched a little thin" given a heavy workload; the committee nonetheless voted unanimously to recommend confirmation. Committee chairs Brian Shiasawa and Lyle W. Hilliard also reported favorable recommendations for other nominees.
After brief discussion about the Youth Parole Authority nominee and related background, an unidentified senator moved that the Senate consent to the governor’s listed appointments. The chamber then conducted a roll call vote; the clerk recorded 23 ayes, 0 nays and 6 absent and the Senate consented to the appointments.
The Senate directed its committee (led by Senator Jerry Stevenson) to notify the governor’s representative that the chamber had concluded its business and adjourned the extraordinary session.
