Senate honors student winners in annual art competition, awards scholarships

Organizers said 305 submissions were received from 23 school districts and 28 works were selected for exhibition in the Capitol. The Senate announced scholarship awards to the selected students, with first place receiving $5,000, second place $3,000, third place $1,000 and additional awards of $500 and $300. Awards were deposited in Utah Educational Savings Plans for the students.
First-place winner Cooper Brown, a 12th-grade student at Fremont High School, was recognized by the Senate; the transcript lists many other winners and their artwork (examples: Elizabeth Ward, Bountiful High School — second place, "Welcome"; Hong Ying Liu, Hillcrest High School — third place, "Old Paths, New People"). Senators thanked sponsors including KeyBank, Zions Bank and Comcast and acknowledged staff from the Utah Division of Arts and Museums and other partners who assisted in organizing the competition.
Senators encouraged their colleagues and visitors to view the exhibition hanging in the Capitol halls and congratulated the students for their accomplishments. The awards presentation included photos and brief remarks but was ceremonial in nature and did not involve formal votes.
