The Utah State Senate convened Jan. 19 and opened the 2018 general session with an invocation, the posting of colors and a performance by the Utah Opera, which legislators formally recognized for four decades of work in the state.
An unnamed chaplain offered the opening prayer, asking that senators be "blessed with compassion" and that they fulfill their responsibilities to the people of Utah. After the Pledge of Allegiance and the posting of the U.S. and state flags by the Color Guard, the Utah Opera performed a selection for the chamber and received praise from presiding officers for an "inspiring and uplifting" contribution to opening day.
Madam Secretary read a citation noting that the Utah Opera was incorporated in 1978 and marking 2018 as its 40th anniversary. The citation said the company’s resident-artist program reaches approximately 65,000 students and 3,000 teachers annually and highlighted the Utah Opera’s participation in the American Opera Initiative. The citation encouraged Utahns "to continue to attend and enjoy the Utah Opera." Utah Opera founder Blaine Peterson and leaders including Christopher McBeth and Paul Meacham were acknowledged on the floor.
Legislative leaders offered the troupe refreshments and a brief additional performance before proceeding with the Senate’s business. The citation and remarks were recorded for the legislative journal.
