Senate adopts resolution honoring Navajo Code Talkers and designates August 14 as Navajo Code Talker Day

The Utah Senate adopted Concurrent Resolution SCR 2 on Feb. 5, 2019 to recognize the contributions of Navajo Code Talkers during World War II and to designate Aug. 14, 2019 as Utah Navajo Code Talker Day. Senator Iwamoto (sponsoring with Senator Hinkins and others) introduced the resolution and invited delegates and leaders from the Navajo Nation to the chamber.
Senator Iwamoto described the code talkers’ role in transmitting top‑secret messages during Pacific Theater operations and credited their code for remaining unbroken by enemy forces. He thanked the University of Utah's J. Willard Marriott Library Special Collections for loaning photographs used for a display and named several attendees including council delegate Seth Damon, Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez, and Navajo Nation council delegates Ricky Nez, Elmer Begay and Nathaniel Brown. Special counsel Larry Echo Hawk and Utah State Division of Indian Affairs director Shirley Silversmith were also acknowledged.
Under suspension of the rules, the Senate passed SCR 2 by voice/roll call (27 yay, 0 nay, 2 absent recorded). Senator Hinkins moved that the resolution be spread across the pages of the Senate Journal and the motion carried. Senators thanked the code talkers and guests for their service before resuming business.
The resolution will be transmitted to the House for its concurrence and will be included in the Senate Journal as requested.
Next steps: Transmit SCR 2 to the House and include the resolution in the Senate Journal as ordered on the floor.
