Utah Senate unanimously confirms governor’s slate of appointments during special session

The Senate convened in a fourth extraordinary session called by the governor under Article 7, Section 6 of the Utah Constitution to consider confirmations. A communication from the governor listed appointments to entities including the Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District Board of Trustees, the political subdivision ethics review commission, the Permanent Community Impact Fund Board and the Board of State History.
The governor’s letter to the Senate said, “Thank you for your timely consideration and confirmation of these appointments.” The communication named nominees such as Barbara L. Townsend (Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District Board of Trustees), Brent Topp (political subdivision ethics review commission), Irene S. Hansen (Permanent Community Impact Fund Board), Margaret H. Olsen (Board of State History), David Rich Lewis (reappointment), Heather A. Wilson (reappointment), David S. Richardson (reappointment), Darcy Stewart (Dixie Technical College Board of Directors), Ed Burgess (reappointment), and Darla K. (Mlojevic/Milevich — transcript contains inconsistent spelling). Committee chairs reported favorable recommendations for several nominees prior to the floor vote.
A senator moved to approve “the names read to us by Madam Secretary.” Senators voiced their assent in sequence; the president announced the tally as 26 yes, 0 no, 3 absent and declared the Senate’s consent to the appointments. The action was a consent vote on a block of nominations rather than separate roll-call results for each individual nominee.
The confirmation took place quickly, without extended debate on individual nominees, and the Senate concluded the extraordinary session the same day.
The Senate adjourned after the confirmations were completed.
