Senate honors Shoshone historian Darren Perry and notes purchase of Bear River Massacre site

Sen. Hilliard presented a citation honoring Darren Perry for his work to recover and document the Shoshone Nation’s history related to the Bear River Massacre and for leadership in developing a memorial and interpretive center at the site.
The citation recognizes Perry’s research and the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation’s efforts to preserve history and culture. During brief remarks on the floor, Perry said he and his group raised $2,000,000 of their own money to purchase the Bear River Massacre site and acknowledged legislative appropriations the prior year intended to support construction of an interpretive center.
Perry said the goal of the work is to bring multiple perspectives forward and to build understanding and reconciliation. Attorney General Sean Reyes and Commissioner Summers of Box Elder County were present for recognition.
Senators recessed briefly into a committee to hear Perry and then returned to the floor. The Senate gave Perry and his guests a round of applause and expressed thanks for his record‑collection and outreach efforts.
The citation and remarks do not create a new binding policy but recognize the state's and local partners’ roles in preservation and memorialization work; further appropriations or implementation steps will follow normal budgetary and planning processes.
