Senate recognizes Broadcom STEM winners and honors families of Utah's fallen service members

The Utah State Senate paused floor business to recognize student accomplishments and to honor families of fallen service members.
Senator Thatcher and other members invited visiting students from Saratoga Shores and Layton High School to the chamber. Lawmakers highlighted three Utah finalists and winners in the Broadcom Foundation STEM competition—Mercedes Rondon (second place, engineering), Cider Claire (Marconi award) and Cassie Holt (first place, technology)—and proposed Senate citations in their honor.
Later in the session, Senator Christensen read an official Utah State Legislature citation honoring Utah's fallen military members, listing many names and dates and asking the body to observe a moment of silence. "We pay tribute to those who are left behind, mothers, fathers, spouses, children, siblings, grandparents, and friends," the citation reads, and senators expressed appreciation to families who attended the ceremony.
The recognitions occurred amid routine legislative business; after the floor remarks the Senate returned to bill consideration and recessed until 2 p.m.
