The Utah Senate on Jan. 26 approved Senate Bill 17 to extend the criminal code evaluation task force for two years and to provide a modest funding request to support its work.
Sponsor Senator Maine said the task force — composed of volunteer experts who have produced multiple code changes in past sessions — requires two more years to complete broader work produced by prior legislation. He described the request as “only a $10,000 ask,” saying staff analysis estimated two years would be necessary to complete the broader scope of code work.
Senator Thatcher, who has overseen interim government-operations reviews, said the task force has brought forward “policy solutions to the legislature” and encouraged support. Maine noted the group’s volunteer composition and past output, and moved the bill forward. The Senate read SB 17 a third time and recorded the floor tally as 24 yeas, 5 nays; the bill will be sent to the House for consideration.
Procedurally, the Senate also discussed how task forces fit into broader legislative priorities; no amendments were made on the floor.
