Senate amends employee-status bill to add 'interpreting' and passes SB32

The Utah Senate amended and passed SB32 on Monday, a bill that revises how the state treats employee versus independent-contractor status to reflect changes in technology and business models.
Sen. Escamilla offered a friendly floor amendment to add the word "interpreting" to the bill’s definitions, noting that interpreting and translating are different professions and that Utah has certification for interpreters; the sponsor accepted the amendment and the chamber adopted it by voice.
Sen. Bramble, the sponsor, said the bill tightens the criteria that determine independent-contractor status so it cannot be used improperly by businesses seeking to classify workers as contractors. “You have to meet all the criteria here in this bill to maintain your independent contractor status,” Bramble said.
After summation was waived, the Senate took a roll-call vote. The clerk announced SB32 had received 28 "yay" votes, 0 "nay" and 1 absent; the bill passed and will go to the House for consideration.
