Senate endorses reappointment of John Fellows as legislative general counsel

On Jan. 20 the Utah Senate approved SJR 1 to reappoint John L. Fellows as general counsel for a six-year term; floor speakers praised his bipartisan service and institutional knowledge and the resolution passed 28–0.
The Utah Senate on Jan. 20 adopted Senate Joint Resolution 1 to reappoint John L. Fellows as general counsel to the Legislature.
Senate President Adams presented the resolution and described Fellows' long service, legal counsel and role defending the legislative process. "He watches out for the institution and helps us preserve our legislative powers," the president said, praising Fellows' staff and expertise.
Sen. Weiler, speaking in support, called his interactions with Fellows valuable and said he would vote aye. Sen. Maine noted Fellows' bipartisan work and assistance to members. Sen. Davis and other senators also voiced support. Sen. Bramble asked about the six-year term length; President Adams and others said the six-year term is the normal term for the office.
The Senate moved to suspend the rules and the constitutional three-reading requirement; on roll call SJR 1 received 28 yeas, 0 nays and 1 absent. The resolution will be returned to the House for its consideration.
