Salt Lake City — The Senate approved House Bill 347 to increase criminal penalties for tampering with ballot drop boxes and their contents, a measure the sponsor said is intended to bolster confidence in election administration.
Senator Owens, speaking for the bill, said the measure increases penalties for taking, concealing, removing or destroying ballot drop boxes or the contents of a ballot drop box from a misdemeanor to a third-degree felony. “So, that's what the bill does,” Owens said while describing the change.
After the presentation, the Senate passed the bill under a recorded vote, 21 yeas, 6 nays and 2 absent. The bill will be returned to the House for the Speaker’s signature.
Vote: House Bill 347 passed the Senate, 21–6 with 2 absent.
