Utah Senate adopts resolution promoting women in STEM as students look on

The Utah Senate unanimously approved a resolution on Feb. 15 encouraging opportunities for women in science, technology, engineering and math. Senator Reby presented Senate Joint Resolution 7 with students from a Society of Women Engineers event in the gallery and said the measure was intended to inspire girls and young women to explore STEM careers.
"These ladies are from all over the valley... They are phenomenal scientists and engineers," Reby said in her summation as she introduced students who had participated in school and community STEM outreach. With no questions from the floor, Reby moved for passage.
The Senate recorded 25 yeas, 0 nays and 4 absent; the resolution will be transmitted to the House for consideration. The floor recognized the students after the vote and senators thanked them for joining the session.
Supporters said the resolution is largely symbolic but aims to highlight K–12 outreach and to encourage school programs that expose girls to STEM opportunities. The sponsor described the resolution as part of broader outreach to schools, and invited questions that the body did not pursue.
The next step is House consideration; there was no action in this session beyond the Senate’s adoption. The Senate also used the occasion to recognize the students and guests present in the chamber.
