House honors Provo Police Master Officer Joseph Shinners, reads citation

The Utah House of Representatives paused its legislative business March 5 to honor Master Officer Joseph Shinners of the Provo Police Department, who was killed in the line of duty on Jan. 5, 2019.
Representative Gibson read a citation that recounted Shinners’ background, service and sacrifice, saying Shinners ‘‘was beloved by his family and respected and loved by the entire Provo Police Department’’ and describing how he entered a vehicle to aid a fellow officer and was fatally shot while protecting colleagues. Representative Perry invited members to a memorial the first Thursday in May to remember Shinners and two other officers who died in the line of duty in the past year.
Members in the chamber rose for a moment of silence and offered condolences to Shinners’ wife and son. Speakers asked colleagues to support the family and to attend the upcoming memorial. The chamber then returned to legislative business and moved on to committee reports and calendar votes.
