House adopts resolution recognizing Navajo Code Talkers and designating commemorative day

The Utah House adopted Senate Concurrent Resolution 2, recognizing and honoring the Navajo code talkers for their role in World War II and designating Aug. 14, 2019, as Navajo Code Talkers Day in Utah. Representative Watkins, the House sponsor, introduced visiting Navajo Nation delegates and President Jonathan Nez and described the code talkers’ service: the use of the Navajo language to transmit top-secret messages across the Pacific Theater from 1942 to 1945.
Watkins recounted historical details presented in the resolution, including that the code was declassified in 1968 and that Congress awarded surviving code talkers Congressional Gold and Silver Medals in 2001. He said the resolution recognizes their "extraordinary contribution" to national security and thanked the visitors in the gallery.
Several members spoke in support. Representative Lyman praised the measure and welcomed the delegates, and the House unanimously passed SCR2 by voice/recorded vote (74–0 as announced), with the Speaker noting the resolution will be signed and submitted for enrollment.
