Utah House honors school bus drivers with unanimous resolution

Representative Waite, sponsor of HJR 2, told the House that school bus drivers ‘‘have an unparalleled safety record’’ and noted that consolidated bus routes remove an estimated 36 cars from the road per bus, reducing traffic and pollution. Waite urged members to support the resolution as recognition of drivers’ training and care.
Representative Chu, speaking in support during the discussion, shared personal memories of long bus routes and praised drivers’ attention to students’ needs, saying he ‘‘had very special people’’ who looked after riders and kept order. Several other members rose to acknowledge drivers in the gallery.
Voting was opened and closed without named roll calls; the resolution passed the House 71-0 and will be transmitted to the Senate for consideration. The sponsor and supporters framed the measure as ceremonial recognition rather than new policy.
The House moved on to other business after the vote; the resolution does not include implementation actions or funding.
