House approves removal of sunset for Rural Online Initiative

The Utah House unanimously approved Senate Bill 55 on Feb. 3, 2021, a measure to remove the sunset provision for the Rural Online Initiative. The bill, presented to the House as having been passed in the Senate, was introduced on the floor and sponsored in the House by Representative Albrecht.
Representative Albrecht described the program as one of the most successful in recent years, saying it "has been so successful ... it was one of the very few programs that survived" budget cuts during the COVID-19 pandemic and that it has created jobs in rural Utah. Albrecht urged support, describing the initiative as "innovative and timely."
The House vote was 66 in favor and 0 opposed. The bill will be returned to the Senate for its signature.
