The Utah House voted to adopt House Concurrent Resolution 18 condemning and censuring Utah State Board of Education member Natalie Klein for a social-media post directed at a student. Representative Spendlove introduced the resolution, saying Klein’s post “recklessly used her social media platform to bully a child” and that the behavior was “irreconcilable with the responsibilities of a Utah State school board member.”
Multiple lawmakers described the post as harmful to the student and a breach of public trust. Representative Pulsipher, speaking as a parent, said the action could “damage” young people and urged passage. Several members and the sponsor noted that the State Board of Education had already taken action: removing duties, committee assignments, and placing other restrictions on Klein’s participation.
Representative Spendlove warned that impeachment would give the official the attention “they seek” and urged a swift censure instead. After debate was ended on a motion to call the question, the House opened and closed the vote; HCR 18 passed 72 yes, 2 no. The resolution will be transmitted to the Senate for its consideration. A statement from the floor reading a message from the targeted student’s parents thanked lawmakers for their quick action and support.
