Tinton Falls council appoints Gregory Alessi to fill seat left vacant by Manginelli

Following the death of Councilman John Manginelli, the Tinton Falls Borough Council unanimously voted Dec. 3 to appoint Gregory Alessi to the vacant seat after counsel outlined the municipal vacancy process under New Jersey law.
The Tinton Falls Borough Council unanimously approved the appointment of Gregory Alessi to fill the council seat left vacant by the recent death of Councilman John Manginelli.
Doctor Dobrin nominated Alessi during the Dec. 3 meeting, saying, "I'd like to make a nomination of Gregory Alessi for the position of councilman." Councilwoman Buckley seconded the nomination. A roll-call vote recorded affirmative votes from Buckley, Doctor Dobrin, Mister Nesse and Missus Clay.
The nomination followed an explanation from council counsel about the municipal vacancy law. Mister Starkey told the council that, for a nonpartisan municipality such as Tinton Falls, the vacancy may be filled by majority vote of the four council members and that any registered voter in Tinton Falls is eligible to be appointed to serve until the next election.
The clerk said the appointed name would be entered into the form resolution at the conclusion of the meeting. There was no public comment recorded on the nomination during the meeting.
The appointment resolves the immediate vacancy created by Manginelli's passing; council members opened the meeting with tributes to the late councilman earlier in the session.
