Parent urges more involvement and clearer processes for special-education students; council liaison offers follow-up

During the public-comment portion of the meeting, resident Kendra Moore described recent difficulties navigating services for her child with special needs and asked how to become more involved in decisions affecting special-education students.

Moore identified herself as a registered nurse and a long-term resident and said she had two young children. She told the council she had followed the chain of command and had contacted a district staff member, Peter Galasso, who had been helpful. Moore said the process had been stressful and that school-safety concerns had heightened her anxiety since recent national shooting incidents.

Council members responded by inviting Moore to attend Board of Education meetings and by offering assistance through the council liaison to the Board of Education. One council member noted the district posts meeting dates on its website and that meetings are usually held in the high school's media room at 7 p.m., including work sessions and regular sessions, as well as livestream options. Council members offered to follow up after the meeting and to touch base with the superintendent and board liaison to ensure the conversation continued.

Moore said she would pursue the suggested avenues for involvement and requested to speak with the liaison after the meeting. No formal board or council action was taken during or as a result of the public comment recorded in the meeting minutes.
