The New Milford Mayor and Council on the evening voted to appoint Raul Bloom to Fire Company No. 2 and approved two police promotions, then recognized officers and detectives with departmental awards.
Council moved and seconded the appointment of Raul Bloom; the motion carried after the chair called for the vote.
The council then approved two personnel resolutions. Resolution 2024:250 promoted a patrol sergeant to the rank of lieutenant; Resolution 2024:251 promoted Officer Adam Conroy to the rank of sergeant. The officers took the required oaths at the meeting. The police chief told the council that both promotions take effect Jan. 1, 2025, and thanked the mayor and council for their support. "Both of these promotions [are] taking effect 01/01/2025," the chief said during the ceremony.
After the promotions, the department presented three meritorious-service recognitions. Officials described a multi-jurisdictional investigation that linked repeated shoplifting incidents across area stores, which detectives later resolved; a burglary arrest at the New Milford Public Library after officers located a suspect inside the building; and a traffic stop that led to the seizure of a loaded, AR-style rifle modified in a way described by police as classifying it as an assault weapon. The driver in the weapons case faced multiple weapons and drug-paraphernalia charges and was lodged in the Bergen County Jail, officials said.
The council additionally recognized Bergen County Sheriff’s Sergeant Walter Hutchinson for life-saving actions after he assisted in the revival of an unresponsive 5-year-old child on a highway shoulder; Hutchinson had received a Bergen County commendation and a hometown-hero acknowledgement from U.S. Rep. Josh Gottheimer.
The meeting record shows the personnel measures and the awards presentations were carried without recorded opposition. The promotions and appointments are personnel actions of the borough and will be reflected in departmental rosters and payroll as appropriate.
