Council tables EMS station change order, approves licenses and two department appointments

Change order tabled: The council tabled Resolution 25-29, a change order to the Electric Eye LLC contract for a new fire alarm system at the Mendon Road EMS Station (1512 Mendon Road) in an amount not to exceed $24,956.76. Fire Chief explained the installation began in March and inspectors identified four issues requiring work, including "6 additional CO detectors," a radio master box required for a municipal building, additional heat detectors and attic-space protection. Councilors pressed why the items were missed in the original plans and asked that the original plan vendor explain the omissions. Councilor Bolio moved to table the item to the next meeting; the chair recorded the item as tabled for further vendor follow-up.
Licenses approved: The council approved a kennel license for Biebs Frenchies LLC at 195 Winthrop Road after questioning application paperwork and inspection status (motion by Councilor Schor; second by Councilor Sweet). The license passed by voice vote, 7 to 0. The council also approved a one-day peddler/hawker license for New England Novelty for the town's July 4 fireworks event, and a special event entertainment license for the 2025 Cumberland Road Race (pending promoters permit and details). Both motions passed unanimously.
Appointments confirmed: Robert Ray was appointed water superintendent by a 7–0 vote. Romeo Mendez was confirmed as director of public works by a 6–1 vote with Councilor Bradley recorded in the negative. Supporters on the council praised both appointees' responsiveness and prior acting service in those roles.
Other business: The council referred several ordinances (including a rezoning item tied to a hydroelectric generation facility and a proposal to add two stop signs at Pollitt and Meadowquest to create a four-way stop) to the ordinance subcommittee. Resolution 25-28 (the Cumberland Safe Streets for All safety action plan) was tabled to the next meeting at the department's request.
