The Town of Falmouth’s police firearms team on Monday described why the department is replacing its service pistols and laid out training and range plans that officials said exceed state minimums.
The department is buying 100 new pistols to replace roughly 73 older pistols, the firearms team lead said. “Our current firearms were purchased on or about 02/2010. Makes them about 14, 15 years old. They are, at their end life,” the firearms team lead said. He told the meeting the new purchase includes optics, flashlights and holsters and that the department also plans to acquire 36 suppressors for rifles.
Officials said the procurement was approved at town meeting and the purchase reflects maintenance problems and planning for possible future growth. “When an officer is involved in a shooting, the state police take your firearm and they hold it until the whole case is done,” the firearms team lead said,…
