Commission closes hearing on amendment to Nobska Lighthouse restoration order to add drainage fix

Rauli Surdy of Cape Henitis Engineering presented an amendment to an existing order of conditions (MassDEP file 25-4897) for Friends of Nobska Light to address a depression that collects stormwater and promotes invasive-plant regrowth. Surdy described a modest grading plan to reduce the depression, keep a smaller basin, and install a leaching pit/yard drain to manage seasonal standing water adjacent to restoration plantings. The proposed mitigation planting list remains the same as the plan approved in October 2023.
Surdy said the contractor found the depression during invasive-removal work and that the added grading and subsurface leaching system would reduce repeated germination of invasives. Staff had no substantive objections and the commission closed the hearing and took the amendment under advisement; commissioners thanked the applicant and noted the project advances the previously approved restoration work.
