The Select Board on Sept. 23 approved a request by Woodwell Climate Research Center for a variance to town sign code to allow a 25‑square‑foot identification sign (code allows 16 sq. ft.) and a smaller trailblazer sign on Woods Hole Road.
Gina Hebert, Woodwell’s director of operations and board relations, and the project's sign consultant presented materials showing a non‑illuminated aluminum cabinet sign with LED face lighting and a stone base designed to fit the campus context. Staff and board members discussed sight lines, illumination controls and the proposed trailblazer because of a blind curve on Woods Hole Road; members noted precedent of similar institutional signs nearby.
A motion to approve the requested variances as presented was moved and seconded and passed by voice vote. Board members said the design and placement struck an acceptable balance between visibility and limits on light pollution.
The Select Board’s vote authorizes the applicant to proceed with permitting and fabrication consistent with the materials presented.
