El Paso ISD board names Dr. Brian Lusk sole finalist for superintendent

The El Paso Independent School District Board of Trustees voted unanimously Monday night to name Dr. Brian Lusk the sole finalist for superintendent, the board announced after a special meeting that reconvened after a closed session.

Trustee Caul moved to name Dr. Brian Lusk as the lone finalist for the position of superintendent of schools; Trustee Leverage seconded the motion, and the board approved it by roll call with seven yes votes and no dissent. Trustees who recorded “yes” votes were Trustee Sutton, Trustee Osterland, Trustee Leverage, Trustee Cuellar, Trustee Beals and Trustee Kahl; the presiding speaker also voted in the affirmative. The board recorded the final tally as 7-0 in favor of the nomination.

The special meeting began Nov. 17 at 5:00 p.m. and the board announced it would go into a closed session under Texas Government Code sections 551.071, 551.074 and 551.129. The meeting was called back into open session at 12:13 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 18, when trustees moved to take action. A board member read a statement on behalf of the full Board of Trustees saying the search process was professional, disciplined and centered on students and community input, and that Dr. Lusk stood out as the best choice for the district. The board said it would release the written statement publicly the same night.

Board members also took a moment on the record to thank district staff and the security officers who remained late during interviews and candidate visits; a staff member, Miss Carrasco, was singled out for praise for her work with El Paso ISD. The meeting adjourned at 12:17 a.m.

No additional motions, amendments or conditions were announced at the meeting. The board identified Dr. Lusk as the lone finalist under the district’s superintendent-search process; the transcript does not specify a next date for final action or any required public comment period before appointment.
