Care2Share announces $70,000 Timken grant to fund community stage and expands services across three counties

FORT SCOTT — Corey Bridal, representing Care2Share cancer support group, gave the Bourbon County Commission a detailed update on the nonprofit’s volunteer-run services and local outreach, and announced a $70,000 grant from the Timken Foundation of Canton to fund a portable community stage.
“Since 02/2009, we have given over $1,500,000,” Bridal told the commission during the July 8 public-comment period, saying the group now averages about $100,000 a year in direct assistance and in-kind services to people with cancer across three counties. Bridal said most cash assistance is provided in small increments to help with daily needs and transportation.
Bridal said the Timken Foundation award, which “doesn’t have to be matched,” is dedicated to purchasing and supporting a community stage that can travel across the three-county area for events such as Fort Fest, school performances and community celebrations. “In September we’ll get a check for $70,000 that we can add to, or just use as is,” Bridal said.
The group described plans for the stage to be roofed and transportable, with possible uses that include school performances, outdoor theater, and local festivals. Care2Share said it is coordinating logistics with the city for storage and operation and noted an informal understanding that the city would help store and maintain the stage, though no final agreement has been executed.
Bridal asked for volunteers and community attendance at upcoming events — including a golf tournament July 27 and serving volunteer shifts at the Bourbon County Fair — and provided contact information for those interested in helping.
The announcement drew short expressions of appreciation from commissioners and closed with Bridal thanking the county for referrals that helped the organization secure office space at the former hospital. No formal county action was requested during the presentation; Bridal described the update as informational.
Looking ahead, Care2Share said it expects to use the stage countywide and will share more specifics about scheduling and logistics as plans are finalized.
