County staff outline $1.1M-plus long-term courthouse repairs; some urgent fixes required
Summary
Maintenance staff told commissioners the courthouse and related facilities have decades of deferred upkeep, citing a roof (~$180,000), boiler (~$450,000), elevator repairs (~$10,000) and a 10-year building plan that will exceed $1.1 million at current prices.

County facilities staff described extensive deferred maintenance at the courthouse and adjacent county buildings, estimating more than $1.1 million in work over a 10-year plan and flagging several immediate items.
Speaker 4, who led the facilities portion of the presentation, said building components have been neglected for 20 years: "We're running a boiler system that's 50 years old ... I was shocked boilers cost $450,000," Speaker 4 said. The speaker estimated the main roof would cost about $180,000 and said elevator repairs identified by a state inspection could require about $10,000 in immediate work.
Why it matters: Deferred maintenance can create safety and operational risks for court operations and county services. Speaker 4 said some repairs may be eligible for jail-sales-tax-funded facilities spending and that commissioners should consider phased work or facility consolidation options (including relocating some services to other county-owned buildings).
Supporting details: Staff listed tuckpointing, window repairs, roof replacement and boiler replacement on the long-term list; they also described accessibility shortcomings in the west end of the building that complicate public use. The county is considering phased maintenance and exploring relocation of functions (probation, driver's-license workspace) to reduce immediate costs.
Next steps: Staff asked commissioners to prioritize urgent items, begin a five- to ten-year facilities plan and consider funding sources, including sales-tax transfers previously earmarked for public-safety debt and facilities. No binding decision or appropriation was made during the meeting.
