Select Board hears updates from town committees on buildings, conservation, animal shelter and beautification

Committee chairs updated the Select Board on the municipal building project delays, conservation workloads and grants, shelter intake and adoption statistics, and a mural-restoration project led by Keep Mansfield Beautiful.
At its Sept. 18 meeting the Select Board received updates from several town committees.
Doug Anino, chair of the Municipal Building Committee, said the senior center (COA) project is about 90% through final design development but remains on hold because sources of funding are not yet secured; site investigation work uncovered restrictions flagged by the Department of Environmental Protection.
Carol Cosell, chair of the Animal Welfare Committee, gave shelter statistics for the year ended July 31: 159 cats taken in (83 strays, 76 surrenders), 164 cats adopted, 9 returned to owners; 56 dogs taken in (30 strays, 26 surrenders), 34 adopted and 23 returned. Mansfield Shelter Friends spent more than $115,000 supporting veterinary care and shelter improvements during the period. The committee described volunteer recruitment and social-media outreach that helped place long-term animals.
Michael Healy, chair of the Conservation Commission, described increased enforcement activity, land-donation considerations, MS4 stormwater responsibilities and a knotweed invasive-species grant. He noted the commission is down a member and is exploring part-time assistance during busy seasons.
Jeff Ward, Keep Mansfield Beautiful director, highlighted cleanup programs, the downtown flower barrel program and a mural-restoration project with the original artist; the group is selling merchandise and engaging local volunteers.
