Council approves VFW license amendments and several rally‑period liquor licenses

The Sturgis Common Council took several liquor‑license actions July 29, approving an amendment to the VFW’s on‑sale liquor license area, transferring an off‑sale 'Liquor City Annex' license from Rally Point to the VFW, and granting licenses to a handful of local businesses.
A staff report explained the VFW amendment removes a small portion of the current licensed on‑sale area. After a public hearing, the council approved the amendment on a motion by Mike with a second by Dawn.
Council then approved a transfer of an off‑sale license to the VFW (mover Nick; second Jim). Tammy, rally and events director, said the Department of Labor and Regulation will lease the armory for five days during the rally to promote jobs and will pay $1,000 (regular booth fee $18.50). Tammy confirmed the state will occupy the booth for five days and pay the fee.
Separately, the council approved a retail malt beverage and South Dakota farm wine license for Freakshow Customs and a special event license (SEL) for Loud American Roadhouse to host a wedding reception on Oct. 5. All motions passed by voice vote.
Council set a public hearing related to the VFW matter for Aug. 19 to finalize associated items.
