The Board of Education announced it will expand from nine members to ten by adding a nonvoting student board member effective July 1. The student will be elected by their peers following school assemblies scheduled this week.
The superintendent said student board members will be nonvoting but must attend every meeting and will have the right to speak at public meetings. They will not participate in executive sessions. Administrators said assemblies, candidate speeches and student elections will be arranged at the high school this week to gauge interest and begin the selection process.
The board did not adopt a policy at the meeting; administrators will continue organizing the student election and will present any necessary procedural details to the board before the new member takes the seat.
