The McDowell County Schools board unanimously approved a proclamation designating May 27, 2025, as McDowell Hero Day after a student-led effort to recognize local first responders.
"Now, therefore, I, Terry Frank, chairman of the board of McDowell County Schools, do hereby proclaim 05/27/2025 as McDowell Hero Day in the McDowell County School System," the chair read before the board voted to record the proclamation.
Miss Finley described the Chick‑fil‑A Leader Academy project that led students to request proclamations from the county commission and the Marion city council. She named students who presented the proposal—Garrison Dietrich, Caitlin Finley, Stella Webb, Reid Wall and Jeremy Berry—and thanked Dallas Doudenmeier, owner of the Morganton Chick‑fil‑A, for local support and mentorship for the academy's projects.
The board also recognized multiple student achievements: Cooper Phillips and Malachi Wilson placed first in the state EMT competition and will advance to the SkillsUSA national conference in Atlanta; Bailey Moss and Ray Fiddix earned second place at an international DECA competition in Orlando; several FELA and FBLA teams qualified for national contests; and Gracie Davis was selected as a regional FFA officer.
First Sergeant Miley and board members highlighted NJROTC's distinguished-unit certification and noted the rifle team's national ranking and fundraising success for upcoming leadership activities. Board members praised students, advisors and community partners and presented awards to student participants.
The meeting continued with routine reports and concluded with a unanimous vote to enter closed session to discuss student records and personnel matters.
