Hurricane High students present Black Ops robotics team; city offers support

Hurricane — Students from Hurricane High School’s Black Ops robotics team described a successful season and appealed for financial support during the City Council meeting.
Representatives Nicole Bennett, Kate Erickson, William Reeve and Davis Henderson told the council the team competes through FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), has sent teams to state and national competitions and uses outreach to help younger students enter STEM. Kate Erickson explained the program pipeline from FLL (First Lego League) to high‑school robotics.
The team described the robot’s capabilities, including a camera that scans QR codes and a mechanism they nicknamed “Zondo.” They said the season required months of design, prototyping, wiring and programming and emphasized community partnerships to support travel and equipment costs.
Mayor noted the council had previously approved $772 in July to support the robotics club and asked the students to provide an invoice so the city can process the payment. Several council members and volunteers offered additional private donations and advice on local sponsorship and logistics.
What’s next: The students were asked to submit an invoice to city staff; councilmembers and local volunteers offered to pursue corporate and individual sponsorships.
