Lewiston council discusses cemetery expansion, sprinkler plans and small facility upgrades

Council members described Nov. 19 meetings with Circle B Irrigation to design a new sprinkler system and prepare a development plan for the cemetery's west side. The council reported they will prioritize watering, drainage improvements and replacing an outhouse with a 30-by-40 cinder-block building that would include restrooms and storage for grounds equipment.
Council members said the new section could add "a little over 2,200" plots. One speaker noted the cemetery has recorded about 2,400 burials to date and estimated the current burial rate at roughly 31 per year; members discussed how the new section would extend capacity and said they expect to earmark funds in the next budget year to complete work.
Design work is ongoing: the contractor and city staff are finalizing plans and cost estimates; staff said they have not yet received final numbers from the contractor but will include council members in follow-up correspondence. The council also discussed improving drainage and whether to phase work beginning on the west side.
The council's next step is to obtain cost estimates, include cemetery improvements in capital budgeting, and return with detailed numbers for council review.
