The Farmers Branch Sustainability Committee met on November 13 and received committee updates on recent programs, progress on policy initiatives and a set of homework and follow-ups for the coming months.
Lauren (committee staff) presented highlights shared with council, including a tree giveaway on Oct. 12 with 200 trees distributed and a shredding event that collected about 1.95 tons of paper. Staff also reported on the city’s water-rebate program: an estimated annual savings tied to the program of about 894,000 gallons of water in total, or roughly 10,600 gallons per participating household, with estimated annual water-and-sewer savings of about $103 per household. Lauren said a greenhouse-gas inventory using 2019 baseline data is being updated to 2023.
Committee members urged better public-facing metrics and suggested a dashboard or simple infographic to display program outcomes (trees planted, gallons saved, participant counts) so the city can demonstrate tangible benefits and support future budgeting. Staff said they would explore options with IT and consider starting with a single program’s indicator to limit maintenance burden.
During committee business the group moved to approve the Oct. 9 meeting minutes; a member made the motion (Speaker 10) and the chair called the voice vote, which passed ('Aye'). Members also asked staff to look into the landfill-contract questions raised by a public commenter and to report back at a future meeting. The committee scheduled its next meeting for December 11 and asked members to come to the January meeting with at least one proposal to accelerate progress on the sustainability plan.
No ordinances or funding votes were taken during this meeting; staff flagged several items as ongoing and committed to follow up on dashboard feasibility, commercial-water initiatives and contract details for landfill operations.
