The Peoria Unified School District Governing Board approved a $1.6 million expenditure to repair the HVAC system at Peoria High School, authorizing the use of bond funds and moving the consent agenda forward.
Board member Monica Sejan Martinez pulled line item 22 from the consent agenda to ask for background on the expenditure. Superintendent Dr. Stifler explained procurement options including a formal request for proposals (RFP) and job order contracting (a shorter-list procurement method capped at $1 million per the rules), and he reminded the board that voters approved a capital bond in February 2012 that has been used to fund school repairs and upgrades. “In 02/2012, the voters of Peoria passed a bond… and we have been using that bond money,” he said.
Board members discussed whether the expense was a one-time need or part of ongoing facility replacements; staff said HVAC replacements are common in Arizona given climate conditions and that schools will periodically need major unit replacements. After discussion, a motion to approve item 22 — the $1.6 million allocation for Peoria High School HVAC work — carried, 5-0.
The board also reviewed routine budget and facilities reports that are posted on the district website. Staff said they will continue to provide those reports and recommended prioritizing the budget discussion in an upcoming study session.
The vote authorizes staff to proceed with the procurement and work; staff will report back to the board as the project advances.
