At the July meeting, Central SD 13J’s superintendent reported year-over-year gains in regular student attendance for the 2023–24 school year and paused discipline reporting pending data reconciliation.
The superintendent said overall regular attendance averaged about 64% for 2023–24, a roughly 6 percentage-point increase from the prior year. Students experiencing disabilities averaged 62% regular attendance (up 6 points) and economically disadvantaged students averaged 60% (up about 5 points). The district’s strategic goal remains to reach 85% regular attendance by 2025.
Staff did not present discipline slides because a state report did not match internal data; the superintendent said she would bring corrected data to the August board meeting or the August retreat. Board members asked whether a recent network outage affected reporting; the superintendent said the most significant disruption occurred in February and March and that recovery can take nine to 12 months. She said staff will return with cleaned, month-by-month data and specific action steps for students close to the 90% regular-attender threshold.
The superintendent framed the attendance gains as ‘‘a positive’’ and attributed improvements to outreach and school-level strategies; the board directed staff to provide more granular data and recommended that principals continue targeted outreach to chronically absent students.
