Giles County board approves summer program allocations, budget amendments and grant updates

District staff summarized summer learning camp allocations and related budget amendments, saying the program has a minimum service target of 314 students and current enrollment exceeding 400. "We are we do have a minimum number of students to be served, which is 314," the presenter said, adding that the district’s allocation from the state is "almost $400,000" and that a transportation allocation of $71,327 is available to cover bus routes and drivers.
Staff said economically disadvantaged participation exceeded the program target (37.25 percent) and described internal budget moves to cover substitutes, instructional supplies, CTE and special-education needs, and pre-K substitute pay. The board moved and approved the summer program allocations, then approved a set of budget amendments that reflect the summer-learning camps, transportation and the line-item adjustments staff described.
Separately on the agenda, the board approved acceptance of a VPK award for fiscal year 2024 identified in the meeting as approximately $706,000. Staff noted some line items required amendment because awards and expenditures shifted during close-out and monthly accounting; the board approved those revisions on motion.
The board also approved several grant-funded purchases and contract items discussed earlier in the meeting (TCAT instructor and dual-enrollment welding lab, virtual-reality headsets change order), each as grant-funded items requiring board approval. All motions on these budget and grant items passed by voice vote.
