At the start of the meeting, community members used the open forum to share announcements and appeals.
Michelle Kristofferson, representing the University of Minnesota Crookston, described campus events including an art-and-garden tour and activities tied to a grant-supported revival of the Allen and Freda Petersen Community Garden. Kristofferson thanked the City of Crookston and partners including the Crookston Area Community Fund, which provided a $10,000 grant to expand the garden. She also outlined voter-registration events and a planned meet-the-candidate forum in early October involving students and community partners.
Val Tuusef, chair of Scruffy Tales Humane Society, said the nonprofit had an ‘‘astronomical drop in donations’’ this year, leaving roughly $600 in savings and payroll needs that could total $10,000–$15,000 a month to keep operations open. Tuusef said the shelter provides impound services for the city and described typical annual revenues in the $75,000–$80,000 range before the recent decline. She solicited ideas, donors and board members and listed donation methods (checks, Facebook, Venmo, PayPal, GoFundMe).
Council members thanked the speakers and noted upcoming community events; staff and council agreed to publicize donation methods for Scruffy Tales.
