Somers Point’s City Council on Nov. 20 approved a slate of routine and project resolutions, voted to award a reconstruction contract, and discussed scheduling a short special meeting so the city can meet a state aid deadline for the Shore Road pedestrian improvements.
City Engineer Snyder told council the city received a New Jersey Department of Transportation grant of $343,785 for Ambler Road and said Arawak Paving is expected to begin a separate bridge/ballard project in mid‑December. Snyder said the Shore Road pedestrian improvement project has bids due Dec. 4 and that the city must award a contract by Dec. 13 under the state aid agreement; because the council’s next regular meeting falls on Dec. 14, he asked whether a special meeting could be scheduled immediately after the steering committee meeting on Dec. 6 to award the contract.
Council adopted several resolutions by voice vote during the meeting. Highlights include:
• Resolution 254 — Award bid for Fiscal Year 2023 municipal aid reconstruction of Ocean Avenue Phase 2 (adopted).
• Resolution 261 — Hiring of full‑time public safety telecommunicator Jacob Bell (adopted).
• Resolution 262 — Authorizing purchase of playground equipment through the Educational Services Commission cooperative purchasing program (adopted).
• Resolution 271 — Chapter 159 NJDOT Ambler Road Phase 1 (acceptance of the grant) (adopted).
• Resolution 273 — Authorizing the mayor to execute an escrow agreement for fence repair with West Maryland LLC (adopted); a resident questioned whether the applicant, not the city, should pay to replace a fence that the zoning board required.
Most votes were approved by unanimous voice vote; the meeting minutes and transcript do not record individual roll‑call tallies for each item.
What’s next: Staff said bids for Shore Road will be received Dec. 4 and requested a special meeting on Dec. 6 to award contracts so the city meets state aid deadlines. Council approved payment of bills totaling $2,495,090.42 and recessed for a five‑minute break before going into executive session at the end of the meeting.
